Yuriko Koike became governor of Tokyo in 2016 after being active on the national political stage for many years. She was elected to the House of Councilors in 1992 and to the House of Representatives in 1993 and held posts including minister of the environment, and special adviser to the prime minister for national security affairs. She became the first woman to be named minister of defense in 2007 and ranked third during the 2008 Liberal Democratic Party Presidential Election.
